Rolfslake Wednesday Open 29th July 2009

Vespe sponsored Chris Telling

With all the big weights down on the lake at the moment and the chance of a PB for any angler on any peg, these Wednesday Opens are drawing all the big weight specialists hoping to be the first to break the 400lb barrier this year.

Today was a rare treat for me as not only was i early for the draw but my wife Irene had come to see me fish which considering it was raining heavy must of been love. With all the big weights coming from either peg 8 or the car park bank pegs 32,30,28 or 26 the anglers were hopeful of one of these for a good days fishing.
As i have been saying for a while that if the right angler draws the right peg then the current world record of 490-08 would be under threat as the fish now average 9lb, bigger that when Gary Thorpe set the current record in 2005. Today with rain forecast all day it never looked like being that type of day but one skilled angler was going to put that to the test.
As the anglers drew their pegs Chris Telling had drew peg 8 but did not fancy fishing long all day,
John Bennet was on 9 again, Mick Lane was on flyer peg 10 , Derek Hammond was on newly pruned peg 11 and the rest of the anglers were scattered around the other pegs leaving only two pegs left. Normally i draw last but with Pete Archer running late i got Irene to draw for me with the objective of getting me a good peg and when she drew me peg 4 i was happy until she drew for Pete and got him peg 32 {she won't be coming back}.
In first place today and currently Rolfslake's top angler was Vespe sponsored Chris Telling who had drawn peg 8 and was going to fish paste on the deck which has won him many matches and put him in many frames. Chris fished between 8 and 6 metres on top of the bar that runs between the small and big lake and was into fish almost straight away and by the end of the first hour had about 18 fish. With constant feeding Chris was able to keep the fish coming and also increase the size of fish as he had 173lb on the board in weighers. In the last hour the fishing slowed down for Chris as Pete on peg 32 started to increase his catch rate ,but by then Chris had already won the match and after what seemed like 10 minutes of weighing in he had caught a fantastic 394-08 and a PB {very well done Chris}.
In second place and who also had a great days fishing was Carp Vader sponsored angler Mark Poppleton. Mark also fished paste on the deck just down the first shelf at a range of 5 metres which normally holds some really big fish, and after heavy feeding which kept the fish at this range Mark was able to put together another big weight of 272-12 and also a PB.
Completing the frame was another Vespe sponsored angler this time Pete Archer on peg 32. Pete was going to try paste but after too many foul hooked fish abandoned this and changed to double corn and banded pellet fished on the deck, but later in the match was able to catch up in the water at close range which boosted his weight to 219-04 and Pete's second frame of the week.
Paste man Mick Lane
Another breaking story was that Mick Lane who is known for his shallow fishing and hatred of paste fishing was today going to try paste as it was the form bait. After a little coaching from John Bennett Mick caught at a range of 5 metres by feeding heavy and using his new XXX13 paste which was on display before the match, and can be brought from him from this weekend. After 5 hours Mick had caught 180-14 and had beaten his fellow two cartel members Bennett and Taylor-Green who normally beat Mick when they fish paste.
Results.
1st Chris Telling peg 8 394-08 paste PB
2nd Mark Poppleton peg 30 272-12 paste PB

Reporter Eddie Taylor-Green with mirror 13-08
As for me it was tale of poor planning as firstly i had not taken my net connectors with me to attach the fishery nets to my box , and then not covering my paste mix which turned into sloppy paste and i could not fish it properly but at least i kept my wife entertained with my cursing for 5 hours {sorry Irene}.
Fishery net are now in place but please remember to bring your net connectors as they are not available at the lake. Each angler is supplied with 3 keepnets and a landing net top and more are available if you are really bagging, this is to aid fish welfare.
Until the next report tight lines Eddie T-Green.

Rolfslake Saturday Open 25th July 2009.

Today's winner Vespe sponsored Pete Archer.

Today Rolfslake was shared between Witney A.C who were having a club match and the 12 anglers who were there for a mini open. Conditions were blustery with rain expected so a nice cup of coffee before the match would help to keep the anglers warm.
Witney A.C had the choice of where they wanted to fish and chose the big lake pegs 9 to 28 as these pegs had the best form of late , which left the open anglers to fish pegs 30 to peg 8. With some of the anglers having fished the night match which fished very well, i was going to take advantage of any of them that would be feeling tired later in the match.
For a change i was early for the draw and wanted either pegs 40 or 2 as the wind had been blowing into this part of the lake and it was black with fish, and i fancied this to throw up a big weight today. As the draw took place the anglers were quick to get in first and some were happy to get the pegs that were fished last night as bait was already there and so were the fish. The pegs that i wanted were also gone so i decided to have what peg was left as was smiling when i opened my hand to see peg 34 there and was off to it like a shot.

As the match started i had a good view of all the anglers around and saw that Pete Archer on peg 8 and Frank Hardy on peg 4 were into fish straight away so again i was going to have to play catch-up and concentrate if i was going to continue on my current framing sequence.
In first place today was Pete Archer who not only had drawn a good peg but was also going to fish across fishing his favoured shallow fishing at depths of between 2 feet and half depth which got him lots of bites and lots of foulhooked fish to start with. After about an hour the fish settled down and Pete started to make every fish count by constantly feeding with pellet to keep them from away from Paul Jay on peg 32, and by using soft pellet and banded pellet his catch rate increased and he was rewarded with a run of big fish { 9 fish for 91lb } which helped him pull away from the chasing pack. After 5 hours and a lot of effort by fishing long 16 metres Pete put 273-12 on the scales for yet another match win by the Vespe sponsored angler {well done Pete}.
In second place and again making fishing look difficult was me Eddie Taylor-Green ,and i was fishing peg 34 for the first time in two years and was a little out of touch with the methods required to fish this peg. I decided to fish three areas of the swim 1.by the second bouy on the rope to my right 2. in front of peg 35's platform and 3. 5 metres out in front. I started by feeding the 5 metre line and was greeted with a mass of bubbles and lots of foulhooked fish so decided to come off this line and fish by the rope and was rewarded with 3 fish and one lost rig. I continued to swap and rotate the pegs with not much success and finally decided to fish at a range of 3.5 metres with my previous paste mix X3 and it made a massive difference as the fish burried the float every time. For the last couple of hours i had a run of big fish {11 for 131lb} which helped me amass my final weight of 187-04 and kept my framing sequence going.
Completing the frame and only two fish short of me was lake owner John Bennett on peg 40 at the bottom end of the lake ,and again John had a frustrating 2 hours at the start so he was also playing catch-up. John fished two lines one down the edge at 7 metres to his right and the second 5 metres straight out in front. John found the fish would not respond when the sun was shining on the water, but later when it got cloudy his catch rate increased on the 5 metre line and when John uses paste he is normally a hard person to beat, but today was a little to far behind. At the end John had 163-04 to complete a 1st , 2nd and 3rd this week alone.

Results.

1st Pete Archer peg 8 273-12

2nd Eddie Taylor-Green peg 34 187-04

3rd John Bennett peg 40 163-04

4th Chris Lovegrove peg 38 122-14

5th Paul Jay peg 32 97-14

6th Richars Doolan peg 2 90-12

7th Mark Orchard peg 30 59-04

John has informed me that from now on anglers are not required to bring either keepnets or landing nets as they will be supplied for use by John . Each angler will be supplied with three keepnets and a landing net top for use and these are to be returned at the end of the match.

Until next weeks report tight lines Eddie.

Rolfslake Wednesday open 22nd July 2009.

The perfect match for Eddie Taylor-Green today.

Today as the anglers arrived at the lake conditions were far from perfect, there was a strong wind blowing from the big lake to the small lake, and a chance of rain was predicted. The area most of the anglers wanted to fish was in the small lake at the back end {pegs 40 and 2} as it was black with fish.

Again i arrived late at the lake and the draw was already in progress, so when i put my hand in and pulled out peg 28 the same peg i drew last week, it gave me another chance to break my P.B of 211-08 which i failed to beat by 2lb.

My plan today was to fish exactly the same as last week but to visit the inside line a lot quicker than i did . As the whistle blew to start the match Dave on 32 was into a fish within 10 seconds of laying his rig out which eventually went 7lb so he was off and running. My target to beat today was cartel member John Bennett who was on peg 9 and he was also into fish pretty quickly so i had my work cut out for the next 5 hours.

In first place today was me Eddie Taylor-Green who after drawing peg 28 today i had a plan to fish just three areas, the two bushes either side of my peg at a range of 3 metres and a line out in front at 5 metres all to be fished with paste on the deck. This method has helped me to four consecutive frames {3 fourths and a second} so i was hopeful that it would work today, and also i was using a new paste that i have been testing recently to be used with a John Walker insert paste float. The first hour was slow on the 5 metre line with fish blowing and plenty of foul hooked fish, which i managed to get one in for 15-08, so i was already better off than last week. In the second hour i tried the bush to my left and was rewarded with four quick double figure fish so that made my mind up for the rest of the match.

It was after this that the swim turned in to fantasy as evertime i put the rig out with my paste X4 i was into fish that were big {i lost one at the net that was near to 20lb but the majority of fish that i lost were big} which eventually cost me three superb John Walker paste floats and a chance of a monster weight. In the last hour i ran out of paste and had to make some more which upset my rhythm and cost me my chance of a very rare 400lb, and i eventually ended up with a new P B of 328-12 which was helped with my board weight of 21 fish for 231-04.

In second place today was John Bennett who came back into form from peg 9 on the motorway bank. John fished two lines ,the first at a range of 6 metres in line with the hut on the opposite bank and the second was against the bank to John's right near the bush. John used paste and banded pellet to catch his fish which were also big as he had 8 fish for 109lb by feeding heavy to keep the fish there and he ended up with 215-00.

Completing the frame was Hugh Crawford on peg 8 ,and he decided to fish halfway across on the bar that runs between the big and small lake. Hugh fished a small ball of paste that kept a steady run of fish visiting his keenets. Later in the match Hugh fished the bush to his left and continued to catch right upto the whistle, and was rewarded with 176-12 for third.

Results.

1st Eddie Taylor-green peg 28 328-12 paste X4.

2nd John Bennett peg 9 215-00 paste.

3rd Hugh Crawford peg 8 176-12 paste.

4th Paul Jay peg 4 148-04 pellet.

5th Dave peg 32 134-08 paste.

6th Liam C peg 5 117-00 pellet.

7th Darren P peg 30 116-04 pellet.

8th Frank Wedgebrow peg 2 106-04 pellet.

9th Roy Davies peg 40 103-14 pellet.

John has asked me to remind all anglers that there will be a night match this week on Friday the 24th July draw 6pm fish 7-12 {midnight} and anyone wanting to fish please call John Bennett.

Until next week Tight lines Eddie T-Green.

Rolfslake Wednesday open 15th July 2009.

Bennett, Lane and Powell were not smiling at the end as the cartel members were all beaten by paste man Eddie today .
Red hot Chris Telling {Vespe} won another match at Rolfslake today .
As the anglers gathered at the draw for another of Rolfslake's Wednesday opens, news had got to them about the very good weights from the previous weekends matches with 200lb winning weights and lots of 100lb+ so they were praying for the fish to still be hungry.
As the draw took place you really wanted to be in the big lake as you could see fish crashing all over the place and with a northerly wind blowing into the carpark bank anywhere from pegs 32 to 24 were going to be in with a shout for victory.
Being one of the last to draw has really got me some good pegs and when i drew out peg 28 i knew two things: [1} i had only got to carry my gear 15 feet from the car and [2} i was only going to fish no more than 5 metres. As the match got under way the only anglers that were catching were Mick Lane on flyer end peg 24, Phil Powell on peg 26 and Trevor Stanley on end peg 32 and with not a bite to be had for the rest of us , 5 hours was going to be a long time.
The methods that were catching were up in the water long fishing banded 6mm pellet and paste fished on the deck feeding heavy and for the rest us it did not matter as we were not catching.
After three and a half hours a few anglers were starting to catch which is normally the way at Rolfs as the fish come close to have feed as it gets late, and the catching was to continue right upto the whistle.
In first place today and on a really good run of form was Vespe sponsored angler Chris Telling who for 2 and a half hours was struggling ,but a change of fishing position to fish the bush to his left just down the shelf brought Chris an incredible run of big fish to 18lb, and he had to get off his box 14 times to weigh his weighers {14 fish for 182lb}. Chris fished on the deck using paste and feeding very heavy to keep the fish in the swim and after 5 hours he had put together another winning bag of 284-08 {well done Chris}.
In second place today was me Eddie who was also on some run of form as i had framed the last three matches, but as usual i was going to have to take some stick from the Swindon mafia {Lane, Powell and Bennett} as they dont like it when i catch fish. Today i started at 8 metres and had only foul hooked fish for my troubles but with an hour and a half to go i switched to the bush to the left as it was moving with the amount of fish under it and never looked back. My bait today was a new paste i have been working on and it worked a treat as i also had a good run of doubles {9 fish for 141-08 and fish to 16-12} which helped me catch the other anglers up. The key to catching big weights is to remember to feed regular to keep the fish there as double figure fish can eat a bag of pellet in minutes. All my fish were caught on paste at a range of 3 metres and my final weight was 209-12 and 0nly two pound of my PB.
Completing the frame was Phil Powell on peg 26 .Phil started up in the water at a depth of two foot going on to three later on and a switch to a margin line increased his catch rate in the last hour which helped Phil amass his weight of 175lb. Phil used banded pellet as bait on his shallow rigs and meat on his margin rigs both feed very heavy.
Results.
1st Chris Telling peg 16 284-08 {14 fish =182-00}
2nd Eddie Taylor-Green peg 28 209-12 {9 fish =141-08}
3rd Phil Powell peg 26 175-00
4th Trevor Stanley peg 32 159-08
5th Mick Lane peg 24 149-08
6th Steve Rich peg 30 143-04
7th Fred Parker peg 9 131-04
8th Nigel Parkes peg 6 125-08
9th Del Smith peg 14 120-00
John Bennett has asked me to inform you that there will be another night match on Friday the 24th of July draw at 6pm fish 7pm to midnight call John if you are interested.

Tumbley Bay club match 12th July 2009

Trevor Stanley winner of todays Tumbley Bay club match with 225-00 from peg 14 caught on paste.
Awaiting further results.

Rolfslake 1st night match 10th July 2009.

Malc Doyle with an 11-12 mirror caught at 10.00 pm

Today saw the very first night match at Rolfslake to be fished under floodlights. The first to fish this match were the 19 lucky visiting Jinx series anglers, who were preparing for their match on the Saturday but were allowed to fish this evening as an experiment to see what happens late in the evening.

The draw was to take place at 4.30pm and the match was to be fished between 6.30 and 11.30pm so as to give the anglers the maximum time to prepare and make their pegs as safe as possible as fishing in the dark and trying to weigh-in double figure fish would have its own challenges. John Bennett had prepared floodlights to use once it had got dark and these were positioned on pegs 24 ,28, and 35 and would be switched on when it got dark 9.30pm.

The theory behind this match was on a Wednesday open between 5.30 and 7.30 the anglers found this to be the most productive catching time so who was to say the fishing would be any different later on. As the anglers drew their pegs they were armed with free starlights and each had either torches or tilly lamps to be able to view their floats as it got dark.

As the match commenced the anglers started to feed as if a normal match was going to end and they were rewarded with fish staight away. The anglers that were 0n pegs 23 to 32 on the car park bank seemed to be catching the most consistent so good weights were on the cards. In the small lake the fishing was a little slower with many of the anglers foul hooking fish as the fish would not settle on the feed, but would do later in the match.

At 9.30 pm John Bennett turned the lights on and did it light up the lake on one side and blind everyone on the other {cheers John}, but the fishing just got better and better and as i looked around the lake everyone seemed to be into fish which was fantastic and this continued right to the whistle by which time had got very dark . All the anglers helped with the weigh-in to ensure that it was done in a safe way just as it is done during the day, and the anglers were buzzing as they recounted their match to each other and an hour later the weigh-in was complete.

After 5 hours fishing the anglers had caught 2288 lb of fish at an average of 120-04 per angler and there were 3 x 200lb and 9 x 100lb weights so i think the experiment was a brilliant success ,and all thanked John for being the first to experience this most bizarre match which may happen again in two weeks time.

Gemma Doyle anything dad can catch so can i with a common 11-12 caught at 9.30pm

Rolfslake Wednesday open 8th July 2009

John Bennet and one of his friends.
After last weeks special match which was won by Jon Walker with a fantastic 388-00, the anglers were hoping that the big weights would continue even if the weather in the last couple of days was a mixture of rain, thunder and cooler temperatures.
The attendances in these Wednesday matches has now grown to a point that if you frame you are beating some quality anglers in the process.
As the draw approached most anglers wanted to draw feature pegs 8,13,16,18,30 or 32 as they have been consistent for big weights so it did not help my cause to arrive late and be only left with a choice of two pegs 26 or 19 so when i put my hand in and drew 26 i new it was going to be a short range paste fishing day {as if it was going to be anything else}.
In first place today was Vespe sponsored Chris Telling who again drew a flyer peg ,this time peg 32 by the hut. Chris started off at a range of 13 metres fishing on the deck using his favoured paste hookbait feeding heavy to draw the fish towards him. As the match went on Chris managed to catch fish closer {4 metres around the bush} which increased his catch rate and after 5 hours put a very good 236-04 to just keep ahead of the chasing pack. In second place was another Vespe angler this time Pete Archer who was drawn opposite Chris on peg 10, and who fished a combination of down the edge to his left and at 10 metres straight out in front. Pete's most productive area was the 10 metre line fished on the deck with a 11mm banded pellet again feeding very positively which brought him a good run of double fish that also took him over the 200lb barrier and he ended up with 207-12.

Completing the frame was Trevor Stanley on peg 8 and he decided to fish at half way across on the bar that runs between the big and small lake. Trevor Attacked his peg by fishing paste and feeding heavy which had the fish queing up to visit his keepnet and after 5 hours was convinced that he had caught over 300lb, but to his horror when we arrived at his peg to weigh-in his keepnets had fallen in a some fish had escaped {bad luck Trevor} and he ended up with 201-12.

Results.
1st Chris Telling peg 32 236-04 paste.
2nd Pete Archer peg 10 207-12 banded 11mm pellet.
3rd Trevor Stanley peg 8 201-12 paste.
4th Eddie Taylor-Green peg 26 152-14 paste.
5th Ian McCulloch peg 16 142-00
6th Paul Jay peg 9 141-12
7th Chris peg 24 141-06
8th John Bennett peg 30 141-00
9th Jon Walker peg 14 132-04
10th Mick Chapple peg 13 131-08
11th Mick Jones peg 18 117-00

As far as my match went i had a very frustrating 5 hours on peg 26, as firstly i lost my lucky Jon Walker special paste float which went off to the bottom of the lake when the fish wrapped it on the platform and broke me off {i had caught nearly 900lb on this float and was still in brand new condition}. Then after a period of foulhooking fish i got into catching mode, which got me 9 doubles in a row for 101-00 then in a period where i was playing catch-up i lost 9 fish and broke two more rigs, and then could not get my paste to mix properly which cost me a lot of fishing time and in the end i ended up 4th for the 3rd time in a row with 152-14 .

In total there was 1902 lb of fish caught in this match and there were 3 x 200lb and 9 x 100lb weights not bad for a Wednesday afternoon match.
Rolfslake invite the Jinx league this Friday and Saturday, and for the first time ever will be fishing a match under floodlights as the start time is 6.30 fishing till 11.30 so come back and see the results of this bizarre match and what weight wins.

Until the next report tight lines Eddie T- Green.
