Rolfslake Saturday Open 25th July 2009.

Today's winner Vespe sponsored Pete Archer.

Today Rolfslake was shared between Witney A.C who were having a club match and the 12 anglers who were there for a mini open. Conditions were blustery with rain expected so a nice cup of coffee before the match would help to keep the anglers warm.
Witney A.C had the choice of where they wanted to fish and chose the big lake pegs 9 to 28 as these pegs had the best form of late , which left the open anglers to fish pegs 30 to peg 8. With some of the anglers having fished the night match which fished very well, i was going to take advantage of any of them that would be feeling tired later in the match.
For a change i was early for the draw and wanted either pegs 40 or 2 as the wind had been blowing into this part of the lake and it was black with fish, and i fancied this to throw up a big weight today. As the draw took place the anglers were quick to get in first and some were happy to get the pegs that were fished last night as bait was already there and so were the fish. The pegs that i wanted were also gone so i decided to have what peg was left as was smiling when i opened my hand to see peg 34 there and was off to it like a shot.

As the match started i had a good view of all the anglers around and saw that Pete Archer on peg 8 and Frank Hardy on peg 4 were into fish straight away so again i was going to have to play catch-up and concentrate if i was going to continue on my current framing sequence.
In first place today was Pete Archer who not only had drawn a good peg but was also going to fish across fishing his favoured shallow fishing at depths of between 2 feet and half depth which got him lots of bites and lots of foulhooked fish to start with. After about an hour the fish settled down and Pete started to make every fish count by constantly feeding with pellet to keep them from away from Paul Jay on peg 32, and by using soft pellet and banded pellet his catch rate increased and he was rewarded with a run of big fish { 9 fish for 91lb } which helped him pull away from the chasing pack. After 5 hours and a lot of effort by fishing long 16 metres Pete put 273-12 on the scales for yet another match win by the Vespe sponsored angler {well done Pete}.
In second place and again making fishing look difficult was me Eddie Taylor-Green ,and i was fishing peg 34 for the first time in two years and was a little out of touch with the methods required to fish this peg. I decided to fish three areas of the swim 1.by the second bouy on the rope to my right 2. in front of peg 35's platform and 3. 5 metres out in front. I started by feeding the 5 metre line and was greeted with a mass of bubbles and lots of foulhooked fish so decided to come off this line and fish by the rope and was rewarded with 3 fish and one lost rig. I continued to swap and rotate the pegs with not much success and finally decided to fish at a range of 3.5 metres with my previous paste mix X3 and it made a massive difference as the fish burried the float every time. For the last couple of hours i had a run of big fish {11 for 131lb} which helped me amass my final weight of 187-04 and kept my framing sequence going.
Completing the frame and only two fish short of me was lake owner John Bennett on peg 40 at the bottom end of the lake ,and again John had a frustrating 2 hours at the start so he was also playing catch-up. John fished two lines one down the edge at 7 metres to his right and the second 5 metres straight out in front. John found the fish would not respond when the sun was shining on the water, but later when it got cloudy his catch rate increased on the 5 metre line and when John uses paste he is normally a hard person to beat, but today was a little to far behind. At the end John had 163-04 to complete a 1st , 2nd and 3rd this week alone.

Results.

1st Pete Archer peg 8 273-12

2nd Eddie Taylor-Green peg 34 187-04

3rd John Bennett peg 40 163-04

4th Chris Lovegrove peg 38 122-14

5th Paul Jay peg 32 97-14

John has informed me that from now on anglers are not required to bring either keepnets or landing nets as they will be supplied for use by John . Each angler will be supplied with three keepnets and a landing net top for use and these are to be returned at the end of the match.

Until next weeks report tight lines Eddie.
