Bennett, Lane and Powell were not smiling at the end as the cartel members were all beaten by paste man Eddie today .
As the anglers gathered at the draw for another of Rolfslake's Wednesday opens, news had got to them about the very good weights from the previous weekends matches with 200lb winning weights and lots of 100lb+ so they were praying for the fish to still be hungry.
As the draw took place you really wanted to be in the big lake as you could see fish crashing all over the place and with a northerly wind blowing into the carpark bank anywhere from pegs 32 to 24 were going to be in with a shout for victory.
Being one of the last to draw has really got me some good pegs and when i drew out peg 28 i knew two things: [1} i had only got to carry my gear 15 feet from the car and [2} i was only going to fish no more than 5 metres. As the match got under way the only anglers that were catching were Mick Lane on flyer end peg 24, Phil Powell on peg 26 and Trevor Stanley on end peg 32 and with not a bite to be had for the rest of us , 5 hours was going to be a long time.
The methods that were catching were up in the water long fishing banded 6mm pellet and paste fished on the deck feeding heavy and for the rest us it did not matter as we were not catching.
After three and a half hours a few anglers were starting to catch which is normally the way at Rolfs as the fish come close to have feed as it gets late, and the catching was to continue right upto the whistle.
In first place today and on a really good run of form was Vespe sponsored angler Chris Telling who for 2 and a half hours was struggling ,but a change of fishing position to fish the bush to his left just down the shelf brought Chris an incredible run of big fish to 18lb, and he had to get off his box 14 times to weigh his weighers {14 fish for 182lb}. Chris fished on the deck using paste and feeding very heavy to keep the fish in the swim and after 5 hours he had put together another winning bag of 284-08 {well done Chris}.
In second place today was me Eddie who was also on some run of form as i had framed the last three matches, but as usual i was going to have to take some stick from the Swindon mafia {Lane, Powell and Bennett} as they dont like it when i catch fish. Today i started at 8 metres and had only foul hooked fish for my troubles but with an hour and a half to go i switched to the bush to the left as it was moving with the amount of fish under it and never looked back. My bait today was a new paste i have been working on and it worked a treat as i also had a good run of doubles {9 fish for 141-08 and fish to 16-12} which helped me catch the other anglers up. The key to catching big weights is to remember to feed regular to keep the fish there as double figure fish can eat a bag of pellet in minutes. All my fish were caught on paste at a range of 3 metres and my final weight was 209-12 and 0nly two pound of my PB.
Completing the frame was Phil Powell on peg 26 .Phil started up in the water at a depth of two foot going on to three later on and a switch to a margin line increased his catch rate in the last hour which helped Phil amass his weight of 175lb. Phil used banded pellet as bait on his shallow rigs and meat on his margin rigs both feed very heavy.
Results.
