Rolfslake Wednesday open 8th July 2009
John Bennet and one of his friends.
After last weeks special match which was won by Jon Walker with a fantastic 388-00, the anglers were hoping that the big weights would continue even if the weather in the last couple of days was a mixture of rain, thunder and cooler temperatures.
The attendances in these Wednesday matches has now grown to a point that if you frame you are beating some quality anglers in the process.
As the draw approached most anglers wanted to draw feature pegs 8,13,16,18,30 or 32 as they have been consistent for big weights so it did not help my cause to arrive late and be only left with a choice of two pegs 26 or 19 so when i put my hand in and drew 26 i new it was going to be a short range paste fishing day {as if it was going to be anything else}.
In first place today was Vespe sponsored Chris Telling who again drew a flyer peg ,this time peg 32 by the hut. Chris started off at a range of 13 metres fishing on the deck using his favoured paste hookbait feeding heavy to draw the fish towards him. As the match went on Chris managed to catch fish closer {4 metres around the bush} which increased his catch rate and after 5 hours put a very good 236-04 to just keep ahead of the chasing pack. In second place was another Vespe angler this time Pete Archer who was drawn opposite Chris on peg 10, and who fished a combination of down the edge to his left and at 10 metres straight out in front. Pete's most productive area was the 10 metre line fished on the deck with a 11mm banded pellet again feeding very positively which brought him a good run of double fish that also took him over the 200lb barrier and he ended up with 207-12.
Completing the frame was Trevor Stanley on peg 8 and he decided to fish at half way across on the bar that runs between the big and small lake. Trevor Attacked his peg by fishing paste and feeding heavy which had the fish queing up to visit his keepnet and after 5 hours was convinced that he had caught over 300lb, but to his horror when we arrived at his peg to weigh-in his keepnets had fallen in a some fish had escaped {bad luck Trevor} and he ended up with 201-12.
Results.
1st Chris Telling peg 32 236-04 paste.
2nd Pete Archer peg 10 207-12 banded 11mm pellet.
3rd Trevor Stanley peg 8 201-12 paste.
4th Eddie Taylor-Green peg 26 152-14 paste.
5th Ian McCulloch peg 16 142-00
6th Paul Jay peg 9 141-12
7th Chris peg 24 141-06
8th John Bennett peg 30 141-00
9th Jon Walker peg 14 132-04
10th Mick Chapple peg 13 131-08
11th Mick Jones peg 18 117-00
As far as my match went i had a very frustrating 5 hours on peg 26, as firstly i lost my lucky Jon Walker special paste float which went off to the bottom of the lake when the fish wrapped it on the platform and broke me off {i had caught nearly 900lb on this float and was still in brand new condition}. Then after a period of foulhooking fish i got into catching mode, which got me 9 doubles in a row for 101-00 then in a period where i was playing catch-up i lost 9 fish and broke two more rigs, and then could not get my paste to mix properly which cost me a lot of fishing time and in the end i ended up 4th for the 3rd time in a row with 152-14 .
In total there was 1902 lb of fish caught in this match and there were 3 x 200lb and 9 x 100lb weights not bad for a Wednesday afternoon match.
Rolfslake invite the Jinx league this Friday and Saturday, and for the first time ever will be fishing a match under floodlights as the start time is 6.30 fishing till 11.30 so come back and see the results of this bizarre match and what weight wins.
Until the next report tight lines Eddie T- Green.
