Rolfslake Open Day

Jon Walker on hand to help visitors catch fish

As John had no matches booked for Saturday 22nd August he decided to host an open day at the lake.
With such short notice and little advertising John was not sure how many would turn up but still went ahead with it.
John also Got a shout out on Keith Arthur's Fisherman Blues Radio show.

Rolfslake expert Jon Walker was on hand to give demonstrations on how to get the carp to bite.
Gem might have a serious competitor for the top lady angler at Rolfs, Millie aged 7 managed to land a 19 lb'er and continue to catch about 150lb of carp. She was using Jon's gear to catch her new PB.
Well done Millie I'm sure you made your dad quite jealous...

There are some pictures but we are waiting to get those. We will post them when we receive them and add a little bit more to this report.

Hopefully John will host another open day with a bit more advertising next time as I'm sure it would have been a good day out with the chance to learn a lot.

Please note... There will not be an Open Match this Wednesday (26th August) as John has a private lake booking that day. Normal service will resume the week after. Thank You.

Wednesday 19th August Open Match

Jon Walker Rolfslake’s big weight master

When John got to the lake this morning he discovered an Algae Bloom on the large lake but with a strong South Westerly wind blowing on the lake the algae all gathered on the side of the lake.
John spent the next 2 hour removing it with a dustpan and a bucket to get the lake ready for the Match.

With the weather been bright and sunny today along with that wind blowing across the lake things seemed spot on for a good match.

15 anglers turned up hoping the lake was going to fish better than previous weeks.
They were not to be disappointed either with the lower weights exceeding Friday nights winners weight.

Top Results.

Jon Walker Peg 16 370-8
Gary K Peg 26 239-12
Mick Lane Peg 4 188-0
Steve Ridge Peg 8 181-8
Pete Arnold Peg 18 180-0
Micky Dene Peg 6 177-12
Phil Powell Peg 40 171-8
Paul Jay Peg 32 160-4
Derek Hammond Peg 2 158-4

Jon Walker fished on the deck using hard pellet to put together an astounding weight.
Anglers that had a slight ripple on the water seemed to be catching better than others.

John Bennett strongly thinks that the change in wind direction has brought the fishing back up to the normal standards of Rolfslake.
Thanks for reading.

Friday 14th August Evening Match

Another evening match at Rolfslake. It was a pleasant evening but the lake had an easterly wind blowing on it, which John thinks this is the reason for the low match weights recently.

With the lake fishing hard again all 9 anglers were finding it hard going.
Only 2 anglers managed to break the ton barrier.

Top 3 Results.

Chris Lovelock Peg 9 136-0
Derek Hammond Peg 22 114-0
Paul Jay Peg 26 94-0

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 12th August 2009

Weather today was supposed to be sunny and warm.

After the visit of the Maggotdrowners last week end for their 3 day annual visit and with the lake fishing very difficult , the regulars were unsure how Rolfslake was going to fish today. Adding to that was the fact that the weather was going to be sunny one moment wet the next with a northerly breeze {not good for fishing at the lake} the anglers were going to have their work cut out today.

As with all current matches at the moment the place you wanted to be drawn on was peg 8 as it was on fire winning all the last 6 matches except last Sundays {sorry Gemma} so an early draw was required to give yourself the best chance. As the draw commenced i had forgot that Rolfslake had a magician in the carpark for when all the anglers had drawn their peg and peg 8 was nowhere to be seen John Bennett opened his hand and there it was { he did actually draw it}.

Phil Powell aka DAWG.

The winner today in a very tight frame was Cartel member Phil Powell who was fishing end peg 26 on the car park bank. Phil fished two lines today, one straight out at a range of 14 metres to be fished shallow fished with a pellet hookbait and the other towards the bush to Phil's right to be fished on the deck again using pellet. Phil had to chop and change between the two lines to get bites but caught all his fish on the long pole but had to vary the depths to keep the fish coming ,and with a lack of big fish to boost his weight Phil was always looking over his shoulder as the chasing pack were only one fish behind. After 5 hours of hard fishing Phil put a very well deserved 121-12 for another well deserved match win.

In a scrap for second place was the two paste masters John Bennet and Vespe sponsored Chris Telling on pegs 8 and 9. John eventually came out on top fishing at 4 metres on the deck using his sunken float method which in the end got him some big fish {on the board weight 96-00} just edging it from Chris. John encountered a problem with foulhooked fish and never got the fish settled down to feed and in the end only had 114-08 for his troubles.

Completing the frame was Chris Telling on peg 9 and he had another frusrating match with the fish never wanting to feed in one place, and Chris had to again work very hard to get the fish to take his paste hookbait. Chris fished two lines ,one out long in line with peg 32 and the other towards the bush to his right but both lines were very hard work as the bites were very finicky and the more you fed the more foulhookers you had. Both lines were fished on the deck fishing a combination of soft paste and super soft paste to keep what few fish there were coming and in the end Chris weighed 114-04 and only a roach away from second.

Results.

1st Phil Powell peg 26 121-12.

2nd John Bennett peg 8 114-08

3rd Chris Telling peg 9 114-04

4th Eddie T-Green peg 16 94-03

5th Mark Poppleton peg 6 92-00

6th Tim peg 30 72-08

7th Pete Arnold peg 13 64-08

8th Steve Rich peg 32 61-08

9th Mick Lane peg 4 52-08

10th Mick Jones peg 2 39-12

John was smiling today
As for me it was not the way i wanted to remember Rolfslake before i went on holiday as with a broken top two { this was on my brilliant Shimano XTA i was gutted } and snapped hollow elastic in the other top kit, i will have to visit the tackle shop on my return from Spain.
It was a frustrating peg 16 for me as i held back feeding today as the peg had blowing fish on it to start with and i still had foul hooked fish. I used paste fished on the deck just a metre out in front of the bush and watched as the float burried every time with a foulhook fish attached and it was only in the last hour and a half that i managed to get a few to keep my framing sequence alive.
Each of the anglers today believed that they should of caught more fish and had a better weight so hopefully this Fridays night match will fish a lot better.
Until next weeks report tight lines Eddie {to be replaced for the next two weeks by Simon}.

Maggot Drowners Pairs Championship 2009 Part 1

Mitch with his new fishing clothes.

Today saw the visit of the maggotdrowners for their annual pairs championships. As the anglers were here for three days they had plenty of time to set up their version of Rolfacres, and when i arrived to watch them on Saturday it looked very cosy with all sizes of tents erected and a barbeque was being prepared for later.

The format for the matches on Saturday and Sunday were for it to be a pairs match, and with the pairs drawn it was down to the serious matter of drawing their pegs. With Rolfslake fishing hard the anglers were hoping to draw one of the feature pegs with pegs 32,34,6,16,28 and flyer peg 8 top of their list.

As i arrived to see John and Pauline the anglers were in the process of setting up so i made my way to see a couple of friends but not all the anglers were happy to see me as they knew i would be helping Gemma and the chance of a minxing was on the cards. As the match started it was a mild sunny day so hopes were for a good bag of fish with a lot of banter flying around the lake so quiet it was never going to be. From where i was it was apparent that it was going to be a hard match with anglers foul hooking fish as they would not settle and feed properly, so every fish had to count to get good points.

Sunday morning turned out to be bright and sunny. Most people woke up early to have their breakfast and get the tents put away before the draw.
The draw and match start time were earlier today as to allow people to get home a bit earlier.

Talk before the draw was who would draw the form peg 8 as its been in the frame in recent matches. The draw got under way and Peg 8 stuck to the hand of Gemma Doyle who needless to say was more than chuffed. The rest of the field we left fearing a good minxing.

Gemma on Peg 8

As the match got underway everyone was awaiting Gemma's customary shout after her first fish but after an hour she was silent. Others were fairing better with Gaz Malman catching regularly in the small lake on peg 37.
In the big lake Methodgob on peg 26 was showing everyone that there were some fish in the peg after Ant Haywood could only catch one skimmer from it yesterday.
He was fishing the pellet waggler about 20 meters out.

Simon on peg 15 was also catching long and shallow on white boilie fished about 2 foot deep. Colin on peg 16 was struggling for a bite while Dave, Peter and Mick the Chippy were having a bit of rod rage casting in to each others swims on pegs 23, 20 and 18 much to the amusement of people close by.

Dave Moore, yesterdays winner was really struggling down on peg 9. Again fishing the paste he could not tempt Rolfs Carp in to feeding. But he was not struggling as much as poor Gemma on Peg 8, the pressure was too much for her. Foul hookers and fish taking her in to the bush breaking her floats meant she could only manage 2 fish much to the relief of everyone else, Except the 4 people she still managed to MINX.

It was clear at the weigh in that the lake had fish hard today with only one Ton weight coming out, Gaz Malman on peg 37.
Mitch had managed to build up a good weight from peg 13 in a late flurry of big fish{weighers} and Malc had managed to find some fish in the margin on Peg 4 but both were just behind Methodgob who had been catching steady on the pellet waggler on Peg 26.

Day two winner Gaz Malman on peg 37 with 165-00

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 5th August 2009

John Bennett with common of 15-00

Another day another Rolfslake Wednesday Open and with me being unable to continue my framing run due to work commitments, it was left to my fellow Cartel members {Bennett, Powell and Lane} to get a result today. After last Sundays match where the fish were not playing ball and only fed for brief spells, the anglers were unsure of what to expect but they all wanted form peg 8.

With the weather a combination of light drizzle and very humid conditions the anglers were very eager to get on with the draw and set up before it got any warmer. As the draw took place the anglers were very quick to get their hands into the bag hoping to draw either pegs 8 or 16, as these had been the pegs with the most consistent form and the chance of a big weight. One by one the look of disapointment on the anglers faces as they drew their pegs and not having peg 8 until John Bennett opened his hand and there it was much to the disgust of the rest of the guys.

Peg 8 was always going to be a waste for John as with his bad back he could not fish long {16 metres} and after losing the number 4 section of his margin pole on peg 9 last week, it was going to be one thing only today 4 metres or bust. Today also saw the return of Trevor Stanley who had been missing for a couple of weeks but who had drawn peg 32 for the fourth time in a row ,so his rigs were already set and ready to go.

As the match started it was apparent that it was going to be a slow start as only a few fish were caught to start with but they were being caught by John B Mick Lane on 22 and Trevor on 32 ,so the rest of the guys were going to have their work cut out.

In first place today was John Bennett who was fishing as exciting as it gets, as to only fish with the top 3 and not be able to add sections on and with the size of fish on this peg John was going to be hanging on. John today was fishing on the deck using his super soft paste which has served him well in recent weeks, and coupled with heavy feeding had the fish lined up. John was able to feed heavy enough to stop the fish getting to Trevor on peg 32 and was rewarded with big fish {he had 111lb of weighers on the board} which helped boost his final weight to 232-12 for another win and return to form. In second place and 6 fish short of a win was Trevor Stanley on peg 32 who was competing with John for the same fish but just came up short. Trevor was fishing a short line 5-6 metres but spent most of the match fishing just down the first shelf in front of the bush to his left, and later in the match fished over the bush close to peg 33. Trevor fished both lines on the deck and again used paste feeding heavy to end up with 190-04 a one fish short of a double ton.

Completing the frame was the Swindon bandit Mick Lane on peg 22, fresh from his match win at Alders farm. Mick fished on the deck along the the bush to his right and used meat and pellet as his hook bait again feeding very positively to draw the fish out. After 5 hours Mick had put 170-12 on the scales for one of the top weights of this peg this year {well done Mick}.

Results
1st John Bennet peg 8 232-12 paste.
2nd Trevor Stanley peg 32 190-04 paste
3rd Mick Lane peg 22 170-12 meat
4th Frank Wedgebrow peg 9 160-08
5th Pete Archer peg 16 100-08
6th Phil Powell peg 11 92-12
7th Mick Jones peg 24 91-04
John has informed me that the next night match will be on Friday the 14th of August with the draw being at 6pm fishing 7 to midnight, with the next one after this being on the 28th of August. If you would like to fish one of these matches please phone John Bennett to book your place.
The next visitors to Rolfslake are the maggot drowners who will be fishing this Friday, Saturday and Sunday,so good luck to all of you.
Until next weeks report tight lines Eddie T-Green.
P.s i will be off on holiday soon and in my absence Simon Mound from the Jinx League has very kindly offered to write the weekly reports so thank-you Simon. All our visitors can join to be a follower of this blog and post a comment if you wish.

Pete Archers Rolfslake Invitation 2nd August 2009.

Pete Archer 3rd place today.

Today a few lucky friends and invited guests turned up from as far as Liverpool and the Isle of Wight to celebrate Pete Archers birthday who did not look a day over fifty.
Most of the invited anglers were from the Match Fishing Scene's website and this gave them a chance to meet friends they only knew by their user name {and some names were quite unusual}. Also Rolfslake has now become a place of beauty that anglers are happy to bring their wives along instead of trying to get away from their nearest and dearest as the lake now provides all facilities that a lady could want.
The format for the day was each angler would bring a tackle gift to the value of £10 in addition to their pools and the match would be split into three sections , section A would be pegs 38, 40 ,2, 4 ,6 ,9 ,10 ,11 section B would be pegs 34, 8 ,16 ,26 ,28 ,30 and 32 and finally section C would be pegs 13 ,14, 18 ,19 ,21 ,22 , 24 and 26.There was to be a top three payout and three section winners by default and with a lucky dip raffle at the end the anglers were very eager to get going.
As Pete Archer and myself were regular anglers at the lake we decided to have the last two pegs to give eveyone a chance of a good draw, and as each angler drew their pegs we were asked lots of questions as to the methods required to fish each one and the bait required. When the anglers started to make their way to their pegs it was time for Pete and i to draw so when he drew peg 11 it left me with small lake peg 34 in the corner and i was off to it faster than than Linford Christie.
My fishing partner in crime John Bennett was very poorly today so could not
fish so it was left to Pauline ,Paul ,Pete and myself to ensure that the anglers were o.k and had everything they needed to start fishing {including the fishery only nets}.
As the match started i had a good view of all the anglers in the small lake and like last week when i drew peg 34 could see Pete G on peg 8 into fish straight away. For the rest of us it was a slow start with only the odd fish being caught so no one was pulling away. In the big lake only Nick Merry on flyer peg 16 on the motorway bank was catching at regular intervals alternating between a five metre line staight out fishing paste and the bush to his left about half way again also fishing paste. Apart from Pete G and Nick the only other angler putting a weight together was Pete Archer on newly pruned peg 11 and who was fishing the bush to his left and over the bush into peg 12 fishing on the deck just past the first shelf using banded and
Carp Vader sponsored Nick Merry.
soft pellet but feeding very heavy to keep the fish in his peg. Around the lake fishing was slow and even the rare sighting of John Bennett out of the caravan did nothing to improve the catch rate.
As it got late into the early evening the carp started to have a feed and anglers all around the lake could be seen playing fish which made the long trip worth while even if Rolfslake fished a little on the moody side today. After the all out was called and the anglers packed their tackle away all of the 23 anglers got involved in the weigh-in ,which was great to see and as we went around the lake apart from Nick ,Pete G and Pete Archer it was going to be a close match as the difference of one lost fish could drop you 6 places.
The winner today was Nick Merry on peg 16 who caught fish from both inside swims using paste and ended up with 215-04. In second place was Pete G on peg 8 who caught at 6 metres ,8 metres and fishing across fishing on the deck and shallow using pellet hookbait but feeding regular and after 5 hours had put 188-08 on the scales. Completing the frame was Pete Archer on 11 and he had 179-00.

Steve and Jan Gerrard aka Mr and Mrs Trueblue.

22nd Lummox peg 21 DNW
The anglers would like to thank Pete Archer for the invitation and a great day out, John and Pauline Bennett for preparing Rolfslake to a fantastic standard, and Paul J for helping sorting the nets and helping the anglers.

Me Eddie Taylor-Green with a common 12-12

As far as my match went it was a case of right peg wrong angler as my match comprised of correct feeding ,fish blowing then foulhooking a fish then losing it. After about 3 hours i landed a fish of about two pound which moved my keepnets apart about three feet, and when i baited with paste for my next put in it fell out of my pole cup and into the margins about 2.5 metres out and would you believe it the float just kept going with a fish of 13lb on the end. After weighing the fish i had another go between the keepnets and on my next put in with my X4 paste the float kept going again this time with a carp of 9-12 attatched. TrueBlue on peg 6 must of thought i was mad fishing at 2 and a half metres but at the end of the match i ended up with 148-04 and fourth place so maybe not so mad after all.

Until the next report tight lines Eddie.
