Rolfslake Wednesday Open 12th August 2009

Weather today was supposed to be sunny and warm.

After the visit of the Maggotdrowners last week end for their 3 day annual visit and with the lake fishing very difficult , the regulars were unsure how Rolfslake was going to fish today. Adding to that was the fact that the weather was going to be sunny one moment wet the next with a northerly breeze {not good for fishing at the lake} the anglers were going to have their work cut out today.

As with all current matches at the moment the place you wanted to be drawn on was peg 8 as it was on fire winning all the last 6 matches except last Sundays {sorry Gemma} so an early draw was required to give yourself the best chance. As the draw commenced i had forgot that Rolfslake had a magician in the carpark for when all the anglers had drawn their peg and peg 8 was nowhere to be seen John Bennett opened his hand and there it was { he did actually draw it}.

Phil Powell aka DAWG.

The winner today in a very tight frame was Cartel member Phil Powell who was fishing end peg 26 on the car park bank. Phil fished two lines today, one straight out at a range of 14 metres to be fished shallow fished with a pellet hookbait and the other towards the bush to Phil's right to be fished on the deck again using pellet. Phil had to chop and change between the two lines to get bites but caught all his fish on the long pole but had to vary the depths to keep the fish coming ,and with a lack of big fish to boost his weight Phil was always looking over his shoulder as the chasing pack were only one fish behind. After 5 hours of hard fishing Phil put a very well deserved 121-12 for another well deserved match win.

In a scrap for second place was the two paste masters John Bennet and Vespe sponsored Chris Telling on pegs 8 and 9. John eventually came out on top fishing at 4 metres on the deck using his sunken float method which in the end got him some big fish {on the board weight 96-00} just edging it from Chris. John encountered a problem with foulhooked fish and never got the fish settled down to feed and in the end only had 114-08 for his troubles.

Completing the frame was Chris Telling on peg 9 and he had another frusrating match with the fish never wanting to feed in one place, and Chris had to again work very hard to get the fish to take his paste hookbait. Chris fished two lines ,one out long in line with peg 32 and the other towards the bush to his right but both lines were very hard work as the bites were very finicky and the more you fed the more foulhookers you had. Both lines were fished on the deck fishing a combination of soft paste and super soft paste to keep what few fish there were coming and in the end Chris weighed 114-04 and only a roach away from second.

John was smiling today
As for me it was not the way i wanted to remember Rolfslake before i went on holiday as with a broken top two { this was on my brilliant Shimano XTA i was gutted } and snapped hollow elastic in the other top kit, i will have to visit the tackle shop on my return from Spain.
It was a frustrating peg 16 for me as i held back feeding today as the peg had blowing fish on it to start with and i still had foul hooked fish. I used paste fished on the deck just a metre out in front of the bush and watched as the float burried every time with a foulhook fish attached and it was only in the last hour and a half that i managed to get a few to keep my framing sequence alive.
Each of the anglers today believed that they should of caught more fish and had a better weight so hopefully this Fridays night match will fish a lot better.
Until next weeks report tight lines Eddie {to be replaced for the next two weeks by Simon}.
