Rolfslake Wednesday Open 30th September 2009

Tim Guise came very close today.

Who drew peg 9 today ?

Clue he used to be a member of the magic circle.

Todays winner John Bennett only just !

Today as the anglers gathered at the draw they were greeted with the big lake totally covered with leaves which was going to make fishing quite a challenge as you would have get your bait in the water without catching a leaf. With the weather cooler and drizzle expected hopes for a good days fishing without foul hooked fish were going to be realized today. With only the big lake being used as the pleasure anglers were fishing the small lake a draw that gave you an end peg would help a great deal ,so pegs 9,32,16,and 26 would give you the best chance of a big weight .
As the anglers drew the one thing they feared was John Bennett and his magic trick of drawing peg 9 as his tackle was already on that side of the lake and the anglers could not believe when he did just that even drawing 6th. The all in sounded and the anglers cautiously started feeding but need not of worried because the fish were ready to have a good old feed today so no small kinder cups were required just a big old hand full of pellet to start with. With me not being able to fish due to work commitments i turned up a half way and was happy to see most of the anglers catching from both sides of the lake on a variety of baits from paste to corn to meat to banded pellet.
Todays winner for about the hundreth time was lake owner John Bennett on peg 9 but today he was going to be run very close and in the end he was going to be only one fish ahead. The great thing about John is that he fishes very positively and also very simply and even that is too hard for me. John fished along the edge to his right towards and into the big bush that the fish live under and fishing a combination of corn and meat on the deck and lifting and dropping his rig to induce bites, gave John a run of big fish {his board weight was 122-00} in his final weight of 255-12.
In second place was Tim Guise on peg 26 who was fishing at a short range of 4-5 metres just in front of the left bush and by fishing paste and banded pellet this brought Tim lots of bites and again lots of big fish {his board weight was 126-08}. Both baits were fished on the deck down the first shelf were the fish normally patrol and apart from the big fish Tim also had another 120-00 of small fish 5-7lb in his final weight of 247-12 and one fish off a match win.
Completing the frame was Mick Jones on peg 14 and Mick fished his normal short range meat fished on the deck feeding quite heavy which brought him lots of bites and foul hooked fish. In the last hour and a half the fish settled and Mick's catch rate increased to keep him clear of Brian Beasley on peg 28 with his weight of 172-04.

Today Brian Beasley had a great day fishing peg 28 on the car park bank, not only did he beat his previous best match weight of 123-00 with a fourth place 152-00, he also beat his previous best carp with a common of 15-08 only to beat it an hour later with a common of 16-08 {well done Brian}.

Adele Beasley with a beautiful common of 17-02

Last week John Bennett gave some fishing advice to Adele Beasley whilst she was fishing a club match on peg 32 and what methods were required to catch the big fish that live there {what John does not know about peg 32 you dont need } the results were big fish capped by a common of 17-02 well done Adele.

Until the next report tight lines Eddie.

Cove A.C Club match September 27th 2009

Rolfslake's black popular tree

Today the anglers of Cove A.C visited Rolfslake for their annual club outing. Fishing was difficult in certain areas with the big lake fishing better than the small lake. Fish were caught on a variety of baits with corn and pellet being the most consistent.
The winner on the day was Adrian Kinth on motorway peg 16 which has produced a few big weights lately and after five hours had 164-08 with fish to double figures for a deserved win {well done Adrian }.

Results top five

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 23rd September 2009

Paste expert and Vespe sponsored Chris Telling

Former paste expert John Bennett
With the combination of indifferent results down on the lake and a lower attendance than normal, the Wednesday regulars where hoping to exercise the ghost of low weights in todays open.
The usual suspects were gathered at the hut before the draw trying to work out if the fish had settled down and were ready to feed, and the feeding alone at the moment is the difference between a good and hard days fishing. With the attendance being low the anglers were sure of one thing a good draw as all the top pegs were included, so there could be no complaints at the end of the match.
As the draw took place John Bennett had drawn form peg 16, Chris Telling was on 32 John Walker was on 30 and Paul Jay was on motorway bank 14, with the rest scattered around the big lake. What was evident today unlike last weekends matches were the fact that the fish were responding to the inital feed and not backing away and John Bennet told me that there were plenty of bites to be had, but the key was to get away from foul hooking them. With paste still being a positive bait to catch big weights as the weather was still mild Chris Telling and Paul Jay were going to fish this exclusively and both were going to fish this at shortish range between 6 and 10 metres. The other anglers were going to stick with banded pellet, corn and meat fished on a lift and drop to tempt bites again fished on the deck.
During the first couple of hours most of the anglers were catching the odd fish but still missing lots of bites, but during the next 3 hours the fish settled down and got feeding as the catch rate increased and also the size of fish as Paul Jay caught one of 18lb on the paste.
The winner at the end of the day and just two fish in front was Vespe sponsored angler Chris Telling who was on a great run of form at the moment all by fishing paste, and today was no different. Chris fished at a range of between 6 -10 metres using soft lumps of paste towards the platform on peg 9 and was rewarded with big fish in his final weight of 244-00 {well done Chris}. In second place was John Bennett who was moaning to me on the phone that he was struggling after 3 hours with only a few fish ,but a few adjustments to his rig to fish corn and meat on the deck increased his catch rate and in the end caught 226-08. John also told me that he had been feeding quite alot and this brought him more bites especially when he fished to his right along the grass bank towards peg 15 , not an area many anglers fish. Completing the frame was Paul Jay on peg 14 who was also another angler with over 200lb today by fishing paste at his normal short range of 5-6 metres feeding positively and after 5 hours had 218-00 and only 4 fish off a match win.

Match Fishing Scene's members match 19th September 2009

The anglers of match fishing scene down on the lake

Today Rolfslake welcomed the anglers from the Matchfishingscene's website to continue in their championship series. The anglers arrived from all over the country hoping to catch one of Rolfslake big match weights but also meet some friends that they only get to talk to via the Internet.
Today was a nice sunny day with no wind which is normally comfortable for the anglers but is not very good for fishing as Rolfslake has been fishing very moody at the moment, so a careful approach was the order of the day. As the anglers drew their pegs information was available to them from the lake regulars on where and how to fish the pegs, which gave them a head start although they had over an hour and a half to get ready. As i was not fishing today it gave me a chance to relax watching the anglers catch fish whilst i took some photo's for the blog which is something that i dont get enough time to do normally.
As the match started it was evident that today was going to be another tough day because normally someone catches a quick fish at the start but for all the anglers that i could see there was not a sign of a stretched elastic to be seen, which was not very good for all concerned. The one thing that i could see were that some anglers were still putting in too much bait and on current form that has spelt disaster as far as the carp were concerned.
Even the two top lake regulars Jon Walker and Chris Telling were really struggling from good pegs and if they cant catch then plans B and C have to come into play. The anglers on the carpark bank were having a few fish on shallow rigs but fishing was very slow, Just in Case on peg 14 was looking very busy but was losing far too many fish ,fishing at 13 metres on the worm but at least there were fish in front of him.
As i decided to walk around the lake Chris Calder on peg 6 was playing a fish so i stayed and watched and in the end a beautiful 17-04 common was on its way to the scales which gave me a chance to photograph it {thanks Chris}. On my way back to the hut Simple aka Simon Mound was starting to have a few fish on boilie fished at a depth of two feet and in three fish had one of 16lb and two of 15lb to put some valuable weight on the board, and again i managed to take some photo's. In the last two hours a few more fish were caught but it was going to be a poor day for big weights and after 5 hours Simon on peg 29 was the winner with 93-12 {well done Simon }.
The big news at the weigh-in was that lake owner John Bennett was trying to claim a little fry to weigh-in that was foul hooked but when he went to look in his keepnet to find it ,it had gone so that was a big DNW for him {sorry John}.
All the anglers would like to thank Ricky for organising the match even if the lake fished moody but they will be back.

Simple aka Simon Mound todays overall winner with 93-12

Section A winner Chris Calder with a 17-04 common

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 16th September 2009.

The only fish that Jon has not caught at Rolfs .

Firstly i would like to wish Pauline Bennett a speedy recovery from her broken ankle last week, so John will have no partner to help him cut the grass or make the tea .

After the big weights from last week the usual suspects were in attendance in this weeks Wednesday's open and expectations were high for a good days fishing. The weather today was a cold north easterly wind which was going to make fishing long a real challenge for all the anglers , so a rod was also going to be needed today if you were going to try and get to them in the middle of the lake.
With the unbeatable form of Jon Walker down on the lake at the moment the anglers were willing him to have a bad draw and he obliged by drawing flyer peg 16 one of his favourite pegs, so it was going to be catch-up for the rest of them. The magician aka John Bennett had amazingly drawn peg 9 again so his tackle was there waiting for him from last week with the rigs already plumbed up and ready to go.
As the match started it was apparent that the fish were not going to respond to heavy feeding as you would catch a couple fish then they would back off, so a measured sensible feeding patern was the order of the day. Pete Archer on peg 14 was catching a few carp on the pole but a change to the tip fished with worm and meat increased the amount of fish he was catching. The anglers that stuck with the pole were struggling to control their rigs as the tow on the lake was very strong. John Bennett on peg 9 was fishing short at 6 metres but instead of fishing with his favoured paste bait was today using corn ,pellet and meat fished on the deck but lifting and dropping his rig to get bites.
Jon Walker on peg 16 started off long with not much success but a change to the tip fished on top of the bar towards peg 24 brought him more bites and fish, but had to keep changing the length of his hooklink from 12 inches to two feet to keep the bites coming. His bait on the tip was corn and pellet 6mm which gave him bites ranging from small movements of the tip to the rod slamming round but still the same result another fish in keepnet. A change to a 6 metre line later in the match fished with paste brought Jon more big carp {his on the board weight was 150lb } and he ended up with 220-12 for another match win {well done Jon}.
In second place was John Bennett with 152-08 and completing the frame was Vespe sponsored Pete Archer with 149-04 who if he had gone on the tip earlier would of been challenging for the win.
Results.
1st Jon Walker peg 16 220-12
2nd John Bennett peg 9 152-08
3rd Pete Archer peg 14 149-04
4th Paul Jay peg 32 120-00
5th Andy Camden peg 30 92-08
6th Frank Wedgebrow peg 10 89-12
7th Pete Arnold peg 13 81-04
The next match coming up is the Friday night match draw 6.30 fish 7.30 - 12.30 so if you fancy a bit of fun night fishing call John Bennett for more information.
On Saturday is the Match Fishing Scene members match so good luck to all the anglers fishing but dont forget you tip rod as the weather is due to be windy.
Until the next report tight lines Eddie

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 10th September 2009.

With Rolfslake fishing a little better at last weekends Fish 4 Wales two day match and with a few anglers catching weights over a ton, expectations for a better days fishing were a little higher than normal in todays Wednesday open.
Also today's match was going to put together two of Rolfslake's most consistent big weight specialists, master float maker and lake record holder Jon Walker and Vespe sponsored paste expert Chris Telling ,so if the fish were hungry they were going to end up in one of these anglers keepnets.

With todays weather due to be a mixture of sun and a chilly north wind the big question was to feed or not to feed as the fish have been backing off the feed in recent weeks. With todays match confined to the big lake a draw out of the wind but with the sun to keep you warm was the order of the day so a draw on the motorway bank pegs 9 to 18 looked a safe bet. As the draw took place the main suspects seemed happy with their draw Jon on peg 10, Chris on peg 18 and John Bennett 0n peg 9 {John should leave his tackle between pegs 8 and 9 because he has been on either for the last 6 weeks}. As the match started John Bennett was off to a flyer fishing at 5 metres on the deck using corn and meat as hook bait and he was out catching everyone on the lake and feeling like a big weight was on the cards. Elsewhere on the lake Paul Jay was catching a few on 16 as was Mick Jones on 14, Jon Walker however next to John on 10 was struggling fishing long but Chris Telling on 18 was out of view from most of the anglers.

After about 2 and a half hours John was on about 160-00 but then his swim died and he found it very difficult to get bites, just as John Walker abandoned his long line and started to fish the paste at a range of 6 metres. It was at this point that John Bennett started to get a sore neck as Jon got into bagging mode catching fish to 16lb which John on 9 had to witness {all 270-00 of them}. Jon caught all of his fish on the deck and when this happens he is a very difficult person to beat especially when the fish are close.

Most of the anglers around the lake were catching fish but nowhere near as many or as fast but with most of the fish being big it never takes long to catch up. As the whistle blew to end the match the one person who had kept a low profile was Chris on 18 and as the anglers came round to weigh him it was going to take a while because Chris had caught a lot of fish fishing paste short
and after many weighs had caught 306-12. The big question was how much had Jon W caught as he had been catching fish right to the end and again after a few weighs had put together another big 354-00 for another match win {well done Jon}.

All in all the match fished very well with 2 x 300lb+, 1 x 200lb and 5 x 100+ weights showing had moody or great Rolfslake can be.

The next set of open dates can be found on the home page of this blog including the night match ,so until the next report tight lines Eddie.

Langley Hall A.C club match Sunday 6th September 2009

Today Rolfslake welcomed Langley Hall A.C from Birmingham for their club match which was fished by 21 eager anglers, all hoping that Rolfslake was going to return to bagging mode. John Bennett told me it was very strange to have a lake full of anglers but an empty car park as the anglers had arrived in a big coach { some anglers do like to arrive in style}.
The weather today was sunny but with a strong breeze blowing in to the big lake , the same weather that has kept the weights low over recent weeks but the anglers were still hopeful to catch that magical ton that Rolfslake is famous for.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 2nd September 2009

With Rolfslake fishing very indifferent at the moment, the anglers were not expecting the weather to make it any more difficult in today's open. The anglers were going to have to endure rain of biblical proportions and a cold and windy day which never help the anglers or make the fish want to to feed, so it was going to be a long and hard five hours.
As with recent matches the anglers had to make a decision as to how to feed because if you feed aggressively you ran the risk of pushing the fish away, and if you did not feed enough you would not be able to draw the fish towards you. On speaking to John Bennett today he told me that the fish are in tip top condition but were not liking the changing weather conditions as with one moment the weather is warm with no wind, then the next it is cold and windy with rain and the fish at Rolfslake have never responded to these conditions.
The winner today was John Beaton {a new name for the frame} who was drawn on moody peg 32 by the hut. John fished a variety of methods from around the bush to over the bush to fishing further out, and used a rig fished on the deck using paste and pellet hookbaits. Feeding was kept in moderation which kept the fish comming a regular intervals and after five hours John had put a very hard earned 185-00 and a match win {well done John}.
In second place was lake regular Paul Jay who was fishing on peg 30. Paul fished his regular paste on the deck at a range of about 5 metres and was rewarded with fish to double figures in his weight of 128-08. Completing the frame was Andy Aston fishing next to Paul on peg 29 and again was fishing on the deck as fishing shallow was near to impossible because of the strong wind. Andy found getting bites a challenge but stuck with it and used pellet hookbait fed at regular intervals, as this was the best method on the day and in the end Andy had 85-08 or about 13 fish for his efforts.
Rolfslake welcomes this Friday and Saturday the Fish for Wales northern site for a two day festival and John hopes that by then the weather will settle down to kick start the fish into feeding. The anglers are reminded to feed according to the bites they are getting ,as to feed too heavy at the start will probably ruin a good swim so start off cautiously and if you are getting regular bites then increase your feeding. Paste is still catching fish but also banded 8mm and soft hook pellets are catching fish if you you lift and drop your rig to induce bites.

Results.

1st John Beaton peg 32 185-00

2nd Paul Jay peg 30 128-08

3rd Andy Aston peg 29 85-08

Further results to follow.

As for me Eddie i have been away on holiday and i would like to thank Simon Mound for keeping the blog up to date with the results.

Whilst i was away in France and Spain i tried my hand at fishing in the marina in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca. Fishing amongst the other anglers who were fishing with hand lines, big cork floats {even the carp down on the lake would have trouble pulling these under} or free lining with big size 4 hooks, i settled down for a couple hours fishing whilst the family were on the beach.

Armed with my 6 foot rod 6lb line and 16 kamasan hooks, to be fished in conjunction with a Jon Walker margin float, i proceeded to lower my bait which was litttle pieces of mussles into a shoal of silver bream like fish and missed my first bite which sailed away but no fish. The 6 anglers to my left were all blanking as the fish would never be able to give a proper bite, so on the next put in i watched as the fish moved in on my bait and again the float sailed away but this time i struck and connected with the fish which gave me the run around on my 6 foot rod but after hauling it up the 8 foot marina wall i had a fish of about 8 ounces so it was England 1 Spain 0. Not having a bucket to show my kids i put it back which in Spain is like like giving your dinner to the cat the anglers did not like that. After the two hours i had about 11 fish and they all went back alive and i never saw any of the guys catch a fish, so i suppose i kept my framing sequence alive even when i am on holiday. As i was about to leave one of the Spanish anglers came to me and asked por favor me puedes compra uno des las plomos which meant could i buy one of your floats but i said of course they are Jon Walker hand made floats so i gave him one to try and show his friends {Jon you now have a new country to sell you floats]. He went away like i had given him a winning lottery ticket so i suppose i have done my good deed for the year.

Until the next report tight lines Eddie and Simon.
