Rolfslake Wednesday Open 2nd September 2009

With Rolfslake fishing very indifferent at the moment, the anglers were not expecting the weather to make it any more difficult in today's open. The anglers were going to have to endure rain of biblical proportions and a cold and windy day which never help the anglers or make the fish want to to feed, so it was going to be a long and hard five hours.
As with recent matches the anglers had to make a decision as to how to feed because if you feed aggressively you ran the risk of pushing the fish away, and if you did not feed enough you would not be able to draw the fish towards you. On speaking to John Bennett today he told me that the fish are in tip top condition but were not liking the changing weather conditions as with one moment the weather is warm with no wind, then the next it is cold and windy with rain and the fish at Rolfslake have never responded to these conditions.
The winner today was John Beaton {a new name for the frame} who was drawn on moody peg 32 by the hut. John fished a variety of methods from around the bush to over the bush to fishing further out, and used a rig fished on the deck using paste and pellet hookbaits. Feeding was kept in moderation which kept the fish comming a regular intervals and after five hours John had put a very hard earned 185-00 and a match win {well done John}.
In second place was lake regular Paul Jay who was fishing on peg 30. Paul fished his regular paste on the deck at a range of about 5 metres and was rewarded with fish to double figures in his weight of 128-08. Completing the frame was Andy Aston fishing next to Paul on peg 29 and again was fishing on the deck as fishing shallow was near to impossible because of the strong wind. Andy found getting bites a challenge but stuck with it and used pellet hookbait fed at regular intervals, as this was the best method on the day and in the end Andy had 85-08 or about 13 fish for his efforts.
Rolfslake welcomes this Friday and Saturday the Fish for Wales northern site for a two day festival and John hopes that by then the weather will settle down to kick start the fish into feeding. The anglers are reminded to feed according to the bites they are getting ,as to feed too heavy at the start will probably ruin a good swim so start off cautiously and if you are getting regular bites then increase your feeding. Paste is still catching fish but also banded 8mm and soft hook pellets are catching fish if you you lift and drop your rig to induce bites.

Results.

1st John Beaton peg 32 185-00

2nd Paul Jay peg 30 128-08

3rd Andy Aston peg 29 85-08

Further results to follow.

As for me Eddie i have been away on holiday and i would like to thank Simon Mound for keeping the blog up to date with the results.

Whilst i was away in France and Spain i tried my hand at fishing in the marina in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca. Fishing amongst the other anglers who were fishing with hand lines, big cork floats {even the carp down on the lake would have trouble pulling these under} or free lining with big size 4 hooks, i settled down for a couple hours fishing whilst the family were on the beach.

Armed with my 6 foot rod 6lb line and 16 kamasan hooks, to be fished in conjunction with a Jon Walker margin float, i proceeded to lower my bait which was litttle pieces of mussles into a shoal of silver bream like fish and missed my first bite which sailed away but no fish. The 6 anglers to my left were all blanking as the fish would never be able to give a proper bite, so on the next put in i watched as the fish moved in on my bait and again the float sailed away but this time i struck and connected with the fish which gave me the run around on my 6 foot rod but after hauling it up the 8 foot marina wall i had a fish of about 8 ounces so it was England 1 Spain 0. Not having a bucket to show my kids i put it back which in Spain is like like giving your dinner to the cat the anglers did not like that. After the two hours i had about 11 fish and they all went back alive and i never saw any of the guys catch a fish, so i suppose i kept my framing sequence alive even when i am on holiday. As i was about to leave one of the Spanish anglers came to me and asked por favor me puedes compra uno des las plomos which meant could i buy one of your floats but i said of course they are Jon Walker hand made floats so i gave him one to try and show his friends {Jon you now have a new country to sell you floats]. He went away like i had given him a winning lottery ticket so i suppose i have done my good deed for the year.

Until the next report tight lines Eddie and Simon.
