Rolfslake Wednesday Open 23rd September 2009

Paste expert and Vespe sponsored Chris Telling

Former paste expert John Bennett
With the combination of indifferent results down on the lake and a lower attendance than normal, the Wednesday regulars where hoping to exercise the ghost of low weights in todays open.
The usual suspects were gathered at the hut before the draw trying to work out if the fish had settled down and were ready to feed, and the feeding alone at the moment is the difference between a good and hard days fishing. With the attendance being low the anglers were sure of one thing a good draw as all the top pegs were included, so there could be no complaints at the end of the match.
As the draw took place John Bennett had drawn form peg 16, Chris Telling was on 32 John Walker was on 30 and Paul Jay was on motorway bank 14, with the rest scattered around the big lake. What was evident today unlike last weekends matches were the fact that the fish were responding to the inital feed and not backing away and John Bennet told me that there were plenty of bites to be had, but the key was to get away from foul hooking them. With paste still being a positive bait to catch big weights as the weather was still mild Chris Telling and Paul Jay were going to fish this exclusively and both were going to fish this at shortish range between 6 and 10 metres. The other anglers were going to stick with banded pellet, corn and meat fished on a lift and drop to tempt bites again fished on the deck.
During the first couple of hours most of the anglers were catching the odd fish but still missing lots of bites, but during the next 3 hours the fish settled down and got feeding as the catch rate increased and also the size of fish as Paul Jay caught one of 18lb on the paste.
The winner at the end of the day and just two fish in front was Vespe sponsored angler Chris Telling who was on a great run of form at the moment all by fishing paste, and today was no different. Chris fished at a range of between 6 -10 metres using soft lumps of paste towards the platform on peg 9 and was rewarded with big fish in his final weight of 244-00 {well done Chris}. In second place was John Bennett who was moaning to me on the phone that he was struggling after 3 hours with only a few fish ,but a few adjustments to his rig to fish corn and meat on the deck increased his catch rate and in the end caught 226-08. John also told me that he had been feeding quite alot and this brought him more bites especially when he fished to his right along the grass bank towards peg 15 , not an area many anglers fish. Completing the frame was Paul Jay on peg 14 who was also another angler with over 200lb today by fishing paste at his normal short range of 5-6 metres feeding positively and after 5 hours had 218-00 and only 4 fish off a match win.
