Rolfslake Wednesday Open 10th September 2009.

With Rolfslake fishing a little better at last weekends Fish 4 Wales two day match and with a few anglers catching weights over a ton, expectations for a better days fishing were a little higher than normal in todays Wednesday open.
Also today's match was going to put together two of Rolfslake's most consistent big weight specialists, master float maker and lake record holder Jon Walker and Vespe sponsored paste expert Chris Telling ,so if the fish were hungry they were going to end up in one of these anglers keepnets.

With todays weather due to be a mixture of sun and a chilly north wind the big question was to feed or not to feed as the fish have been backing off the feed in recent weeks. With todays match confined to the big lake a draw out of the wind but with the sun to keep you warm was the order of the day so a draw on the motorway bank pegs 9 to 18 looked a safe bet. As the draw took place the main suspects seemed happy with their draw Jon on peg 10, Chris on peg 18 and John Bennett 0n peg 9 {John should leave his tackle between pegs 8 and 9 because he has been on either for the last 6 weeks}. As the match started John Bennett was off to a flyer fishing at 5 metres on the deck using corn and meat as hook bait and he was out catching everyone on the lake and feeling like a big weight was on the cards. Elsewhere on the lake Paul Jay was catching a few on 16 as was Mick Jones on 14, Jon Walker however next to John on 10 was struggling fishing long but Chris Telling on 18 was out of view from most of the anglers.

After about 2 and a half hours John was on about 160-00 but then his swim died and he found it very difficult to get bites, just as John Walker abandoned his long line and started to fish the paste at a range of 6 metres. It was at this point that John Bennett started to get a sore neck as Jon got into bagging mode catching fish to 16lb which John on 9 had to witness {all 270-00 of them}. Jon caught all of his fish on the deck and when this happens he is a very difficult person to beat especially when the fish are close.

Most of the anglers around the lake were catching fish but nowhere near as many or as fast but with most of the fish being big it never takes long to catch up. As the whistle blew to end the match the one person who had kept a low profile was Chris on 18 and as the anglers came round to weigh him it was going to take a while because Chris had caught a lot of fish fishing paste short
and after many weighs had caught 306-12. The big question was how much had Jon W caught as he had been catching fish right to the end and again after a few weighs had put together another big 354-00 for another match win {well done Jon}.

All in all the match fished very well with 2 x 300lb+, 1 x 200lb and 5 x 100+ weights showing had moody or great Rolfslake can be.

The next set of open dates can be found on the home page of this blog including the night match ,so until the next report tight lines Eddie.
